Swedish zoo shoots escaped chimps
#1
Four of the  chimps escaped from their enclosure at Sweden's Furivik Zoo. The zoo was closed for the season so the public was not in danger,
People who have worked with the chimps did mot think they were a danger. They could have been sedated, but instead they were shot and killed.

The zoo is being heavily criticized for its actions. It was easier to just kill the chimps, but it was not necessary.
They were chimps, a highly intelligent species. They could probably have been persuaded to return to their enclosure if they were offered something they wanted.
They might have gone back to their enclosure on their own after they had wandered around a while. The fast solution was to kill them, but it was not the right solution.

The zoo's explanation is totally unconvincing.

The chimps would have returned to their enclosure when they were ready to eat and sleep. They were just having fun exploring.
Zoos need to rethink how they deal with animals getting loose.

If they have the right equipment and someone skilled enough, they do not need to get close to the animal to sedate it.
Researchers tranquilize polar bears safely from a distance in the wild, so they can study them.

They could have thrown the chimps a treat with a sedative in it and they would have eaten it. Why are they not prepared to do something like that.
