Vancouver Island Marmot has a record year for captive born babies.
#1
The Vancouver Island Marmot came very close to extinction. They have survived and increased in numbers because of captive breeding programs.
They have gone from 31 marmots in 2003 to 258 in 2021. Last year was a record year for wild born pups. This year it is captive born pups that have done well.
There will be 50 captive born pups to be released next spring. That is going to take some serious planning. That is more than they expected. It is however a problem they are happy to have.

This is one of the conservation success stories. Marmot numbers are ten times higher. The species is doing well in the wild again and captive breeding is helping to expand their numbers and their range. We can't stop now, but it looks like the marmots are going to make it.  If I went out to Vancouver Island now, I could possibly see a Marmot in the wild.  Even if all 50 don't survive, that is a big boost to their numbers.
