Human altruism to other species may have helped humans thrive
#1
Human behavior towards other species is very much of interest to scientists. Somehow we formed bonds with dogs, cats, horses and other animals. This has been to our advantage. Children in particular show kindness to animals. In a study using toddlers and puppies, the toddler would hand over a treat or toy that was out of the puppy's reach. This happened even if the child had not lived with a dog. They seemed to know what the puppy wanted and they helped.

This is going to take more study, but it makes sense. Animals wouldn't have chosen to live with us if we hadn't shown kindness to them.
We may fail many times, but there is much evidence that people are good to animals. Every day we read stories about rescues. There are many organizations dedicated to animal welfare. This is the best of us as humans. It is what we can be. It is what we are trying to be. The bad things are what we are trying to leave behind. Being good to animals has benefited us as a species. Now we need to live up to that. I think someday we will.
