Axolotls get museum and conservation center at Chapultepec zoo

The rare and very endangered axolotls now have a museum and conservation center at the Chapultepec zoo. Axolotls are native to Mexico, but have existed in a very small area. Their habitat is decreasing because of human activity. 
Axolotls are an exceptional animal in their ability to regenerate lost parts. They can regenerate any tissue. This is a unique ability and they are much studied because of it. That hasn't helped their survival in the wild.

I am glad they have a conservation center. Maybe awareness will help their survival.
Considering their unique ability to regenerate body parts, I would expect people to cherish them and fight for their survival. 
Many of the axolotls live in labs where they are studied. Many more have ended up as pets. They are a strange pet.
They are an amphibian that does not leave the water. They are sensitive to water conditions. That sensitivity is part of why they are so threatened in the wild.
They do not survive in polluted water. 
If we want them to survive we are going to have to work for it.
