Fire damages exotic animal rescue
#1
Urban Safari Rescue Society had a fire in their shelter Friday night. Sadly they lost 60 animals, one fifth of the animals they care for.
Staff and volunteers are fostering the remaining mammals. The remaining reptiles are being cared for in the undamaged part of the building.
This is a tragic loss of life and a terrible set back for the Society. This time of the year they do educational visits to schools. It is an important source of income for the shelter.
They estimate it will be summer before the rescue is fully operational.

This is so sad. It was the animals like lizards, snakes, turtles, guinea pigs, sugar gliders, birds and fish that died.  They are such vulnerable creatures.
The people who work and volunteer at the rescue must be heart broken. When you look after little creatures like that it is so hard to lose them.
Too few rescues are able to deal with the exotic pets. This rescue specialized in them.
I hope people in the community rally around them and help them get things going again.
