Dealing with invasive goldfish
#1
Goldfish are popular pets and they are available everywhere. The problem is pet owners who get tired of them and release them in ponds, lakes and rivers.
They are adaptable, they survive and they multiply. They also destroy native fish, plants and habitats.

Calgary has many ponds and there are goldfish in most of them. The city is now draining a couple of ponds to prevent the goldfish from reaching the Bow River. If they reach the river they will spread and destroy native fish. Sadly the goldfish will die.

BC is also having a problem. They have ponds that are overrun with goldfish.

This is a serious problem. No one wants to kill goldfish, but they can't let them continue to spread and destroy local wildlife.
The real problem is irresponsible fish owners. Maybe we should have to register goldfish the way we register cats and dogs.
Even the most out of control cat population will never be as bad as a few goldfish tossed in a pond.
