Wasps, the underappreciated insect

Wasps are both smarter and more useful than most people realize. They have been studying wasps and they can learn and remember.

I knew they were smart. I have watched them in my garden and I think they have watched me. I get along with my garden wasps. If they hang around when I am eating outside, I give them some of my food and they eat and leave me in peace. They do like the sweet stuff.

People who frantically try to chase wasps away are missing the point. Give them a treat and they will leave. Swatting at them has the opposite results.

I have no problem with wasps. They usually only sting when hit or threatened.

However, the recent rapid spread of Asiatic hornets is something else. Human activity has caused their rapid expansion all across Europe, where previously they did not exist. They can kill off a whole hive in one session. They are a real threat to the future existence of bees on this planet.

You are right, the Asiatic hornets are a whole different problem.
They are an invasive species so they don't belong in your ecosystem.

We call them Murder Hornets in North America.
I don't know what we can do to stop them.
