New Zealand crowns its Bird of the Century

New Zealand has been running a bird of the century contest. People voted on what they thought should be bird of the century. 
Usually a few people are interested. This year comedian John Oliver got involved and promoted the Puteketeke. He promoted its cause globally and people voted.  So the New Zealand bird of the Century is the Puteketeke.

It is a beautiful bird. It is just interesting how many people responded to the campaign. Usually 60,000 people vote. This year 350,000 people voted, from 195 countries. I hope this has made people more aware of birds. It certainly got a response.
