New Orca calf spotted
#1
A new Orca calf was just spotted with the west coast transient Biggs Orca population. Newborn Orcas have a slight orange tinge. We don't know why that is.
The transient Orca population lives and feeds in the Salish Sea on seals and sea lions. Their numbers have been steady.

The southern resident Orcas feed on salmon and their numbers are low. There are less than 100 left.

It is good news that the Biggs Orcas have steady numbers and newborn calves.
The southern resident Orcas are worrying. They feed on salmon that are declining in numbers. As the salmon decline, the Orcas decline.
We need to do some serious conservation work to save the salmon and the orcas. To do that we need to do some serious conservation work on the rivers that the salmon return to for spawning.  We need to reduce pollution that impacts the survival of the Orcas and the salmon.
We need to get serious about protecting our oceans. That need is global, but the reasons are noticeable in populations of Orcas in local areas.
