The southern resident Orcas are a very endangered population. Known as J Pod, they live along the west coast of Canada and USA.
The calf was not seen with the pod on Dec 23, but was spotted of Dec 26, 2023. The whales were spotted off of Washington State.
The baby was seen near a female who has not given birth before.

This is a real gift for J Pod. Any new calf will help the pod to survive. Calves are vulnerable when they are this young so we have to hope that it survives.
We also have to work to clean up the oceans so that the calves born can survive.
