Nine Right Whale calves so far in North Atlantic
#1
So far nine Right Whale calves have been spotted. Some mothers are older and one is a first time mother. This is not a lot of calves. Hopefully there will be more. Right Whales are starting to give birth at later ages. As a population they are vulnerable. There are nine calves, but the calves need to survive.
The biggest danger is boat strikes since the calves can't stay under water for long. Boaters need to be very aware and watch out for these vulnerable little calves.

Yet another species is dependent on us to keep them safe. I know restricting boat speeds has helped.
Maybe boats need to be banned from the area where the calves are born until they can swim better and dive deeper.
It would be a way of making restitution since whales are in trouble because of whaling.
