Biologists observed a mother seal in distress over her baby who had been pulled away by the waves. The baby seal was in distress. A male elephant rushed into the water and saved the baby.
The scientists were surprised because they have not observed male Elephant Seals doing things like that.

It sounds like the male didn't hesitate to save the baby.
We are not used to seeing such behavior, but maybe we don't see everything.
How often would a situation like this happen. Someone would have to be right there at the right moment to see it.
This time the biologists were there at the exact moment the rescue happened. It is possible that this is normal behavior and we just don't see it happen.
