Ecology meets economics in Senegal
#1
The women have formed a collective and work together in the Mangrove harvesting shellfish.
Climate change has changed things for the Mangrove and the harvest is much reduced.
The women have taken up bee keeping. The bees benefit the Mangrove and protect it. The women are also able to harvest the honey and expand their sources of income. That means they can rest the mangrove and allow the shellfish time for spawning.

No doubt the women will have to change and adapt as the climate changes more. The fact that they have already made changes is a good sign for their future and the future of the Mangrove.

This should be an example for all of us around the world. There are ways of changing how we do things that will benefit us and the ecosystems we interact with.
