Animal self awareness and what it means for us

For centuries we have dismissed animals as unintelligent and unfeeling. We have decided that they do not have self awareness.
It looks like we have been wrong all along.
So what does that mean for us?

Now that we know, it is going to be complicated. Most people will have trouble accepting that animals are self aware. We like to keep that for ourselves.
Animal self awareness calls into question our farming practices and our use of animals in labs. We are going to need to rethink everything. I think a lot of people won't want to change. It is going to take work to change minds. It is going to be a slow process.
