Fred Longo took in an orphaned squirrel 7 years ago after seeing its mother run over.
Longo runs an animal shelter and has a number of animals. The squirrel, named peanut was a special favorite.
Peanut actually became a social media star. Many people saw images of him on Instagram. Sadly one of those people reported him to
the Department of Environmental Conservation. They took Peanut and a raccoon named Fred. Both were euthanized and tested for rabies.

It s unlikely that Fred or Peanut were exposed to rabies. They certainly could have been vaccinated. Having them was probably not allowed so posting pictures on Instagram was very risky. It seems we can't resist sharing things on social media these days. People have been caught posting criminal actions on social media.
One small squirrel could have been kept hidden from the public and who would have known. Making Peanut a public figure put him in danger. It ended up with Peanut and Fred losing their lives. Maybe we should think before we make something public. Sometimes a little discretion is advised.
